TORY PEER SPEAKS OUT AGAINST WOOLWICH

Created on 18th June 2009

Tory peer Lord Lucas has declared the construction of a £40m Woolwich-based shooting venue an "appalling waste." His comments, directed at the 2012 organisers, came during question time at Westminster.

Lord Lucas, echoing the shooting fraternity, said that a cheaper facility in Bisley would be more cost-effective. The Woolwich venue, costing £40m to develop, would be torn down after the Games, contradicting the promises made during the Olympic bid to leave a lasting legacy for all sports. In contrast, utilising Bisley would be £10m cheaper and leave shooting with a venue suitable for hosting international competitions.

The Woolwich project was defended by Lord Moynihan, a director of the 2012 organising committee. The former Conservative sport minister claimed that any construction at Bisley would involve "highly sensitive development" on green belt land. It is, unfortunately, highly unlikely that the organising committee will back down on this particular issue.
